How to use them
Pull a dull knife through the coarse slot a few times to rebuild the edge, then finish in the fine ceramic slot. For upkeep, a few light pulls through the fine slot after you cook keep the edge keen. Our How to Sharpen a Kitchen Knife guide covers pull-through technique, honing, and when a knife needs more than a touch-up.
Push the holder's prongs into an onion or a piece of meat, then slice between the prongs. It keeps slices even and your knuckles out of the way. For the cuts themselves, see our Knife Techniques Beginner's Guide.
Care
Rinse both pieces under hot running water and dry them before you put them away.
Questions
Which slot should I use? The coarse slot for a dull edge, the fine ceramic slot for regular maintenance. Always finish on the fine slot.
Does the holder work on meat? Yes. It holds meat steady for slicing, and the prongs can also be used to tenderize it.
Can it sharpen serrated knives? The maker's graphic says it sharpens straight and serrated blades. We still touch up serrations one tooth at a time with a tapered rod, as our sharpening guide explains, and keep pull-through slots for straight edges.
